Thermo Fisher

The Challenge

At Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics' Vilnius site, continuous improvement and Smart Factory initiatives are central to maintaining a competitive edge. The culture is built on Lean thinking and innovation. But as automation efforts accelerated, one thing became clear: the team needed stronger data skills.

Key gaps in data cleaning, visualisation, and architecture were creating inefficiencies and introducing risks:

Employees spent too much time on manual clean-ups

Inconsistent data structures led to unreliable insights

Weak data foundations created bottlenecks in process optimisation

Despite a strong Lean culture and the right mindset, one thing was missing: data fluency. What the company needed next was focused investment in building the team’s data capabilities.

The Solution

Thermo Fisher selected Turing College (Boom’s parent company) to deliver practical, business-focused data training to 90 employees from R&D, product, data, and operations teams. The decision was driven by the programme’s structured, project-based approach and the opportunity to leverage EU funding support.

The training was self-paced, supported by expert mentorship and hands-on projects tailored to real business challenges. Employees could balance learning with their roles, often dedicating one full day per week to studies. All of this amounted to a confident and scalable upskilling experience.

The training programs are practical, well-structured, and tailored to real-world business needs, helping employees develop valuable data skills that can be applied immediately.

The Impact

The results were felt almost immediately. Employees began processing and interpreting data with greater speed and accuracy — and the ripple effects were felt across the organisation:

Less manual work and faster reporting

More informed, data-driven decision-making

Clearer visibility into performance and opportunities for improvement

One standout example: Manufacturing Supervisor Augustas Partikas applied what he was learning in real time to revamp internal tools — improvements that continue to deliver value today. Others built Power BI dashboards, streamlined reporting, and helped reduce friction across departments.

Crucially, the new skills didn’t stay siloed. They spread across teams, improved day-to-day operations, and helped embed a data-first mindset into the company’s culture.

The programme also delivered tangible financial impact. Thermo Fisher secured government funding that fully covered the cost of training — nearly £500,000 — enabling them to invest in their existing workforce without tapping into budget or relying on costly external hires.

What’s Next

Some employees have moved on, as expected in any large organisation. But the impact of the training remains. Several team members have stepped into new roles or earned promotions, with the skills they developed continuing to deliver value across the business. More importantly, the training helped reinforce a culture of continuous learning and opened up new opportunities for career growth.

Would They Recommend It? Absolutely.

By choosing a partner that understands what teams actually need to succeed, Thermo Fisher Baltics has strengthened their data capabilities — and their ability to make smarter decisions every day.
